From Soft Pretzels to Waterside Dining: Local Favorites Around Upper Chichester

By Andre Richardson ·

If you are looking for the locally owned places that make Delaware County, Pennsylvania feel like a real community, this guide is for you. From a cozy coffee shop on Chichester Avenue in Boothwyn to waterside dining in Ridley Park and a much-loved soft pretzel bakery in Clifton Heights, I have rounded up some of my favorite small businesses across the towns around Upper Chichester. Many are family-run and worth a visit no matter where you are in the county.

Coffee, Bakeries, and the Morning Ritual

Every town in Delaware County has its own coffee and bakery scene, and Boothwyn, Ridley Park, and Clifton Heights are no exception. These are the places locals drift to before work and on slow weekend mornings.

Chi Cafe at 3378 Chichester Avenue in Boothwyn is the kind of neighborhood coffee shop you want to support. It sits right on Chichester Avenue in the heart of Boothwyn, an easy stop whether you live in Upper Chichester Township or are heading through town on your way to work.

Ardour Bakery+Coffee at 119 E Sellers Avenue in Ridley Park is a modern, locally owned bakery and coffee bar, a nice stop for a fresh pastry before a walk over to East Lake Park. A little further along, The BrickHaus at 13 E Hinckley Avenue is a café that has become a neighborhood meeting spot right by the Ridley Park train station.

No Delaware County food roundup is complete without soft pretzels, and Bernie's Pretzel Bakery at 570 E Baltimore Avenue in Clifton Heights bakes the real thing. It holds a strong 4.7 out of 5 rating from local reviewers, and a warm pretzel there is hard to beat as fall weather moves in.

Diners, Burgers, and Family Favorites

The MacDade Boulevard corridor in Folsom and Holmes is packed with dependable, family-friendly food, and a few of these have been local institutions for generations.

At 1900 MacDade Boulevard in Folsom, Nifty Fifty's is a retro-style burger and shake spot with a loyal following across the county, a classic pick for kids and anyone with a sweet tooth. Not far away, Pat's Pizza Family Restaurant at 2104 MacDade Boulevard in Holmes is a long-running local choice for pizza and Italian takeout.

Over in Glenolden, Alltown Pizza on East Glenolden Avenue is a reliable neighborhood slice, and Roma Deli at 2103 MacDade Boulevard in Holmes is a no-nonsense local deli on the same corridor.

By the Water and After Dark

For a meal with a view, Delaware County has more options than people give it credit for. Stinger's Waterfront at 401 S Swarthmore Avenue in Ridley Park serves food and drinks right on the water and is one of the more scenic places to eat in the county. It holds a strong 4.1 out of 5 rating from more than 120 reviews, and it is a popular spot for a meal outside in the warmer months.

The Fainting Goat Bar and Restaurant at 105 S MacDade Boulevard in Glenolden is a friendly neighborhood bar and restaurant with a fun name and a welcoming crowd. A little further south in Prospect Park, John Morton's Tavern at 400 Lincoln Avenue is a classic borough tavern sitting right in the heart of that small Delaware County town.

Deli Counters, Steaks, and Takeout

If you are planning a weeknight in or catering a family get-together, these are the kinds of small businesses worth keeping in your phone.

Falone's at 49 N Chester Pike in Glenolden is a one-stop shop for cheesesteaks, hoagies, wings, pizza, and craft beer, exactly the kind of locally owned spot that boroughs like Glenolden are built on. At 110 W Baltimore Pike in Clifton Heights, Furio's Deli & Catering is a family-run deli that locals rely on for sandwiches and catering. And for takeout, Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant at 326 N Chester Pike in Glenolden is a dependable neighborhood favorite.

Why the Local Scene Matters

When you are shopping for a home, the neighborhood around it matters just as much as the house itself. Towns like Boothwyn, Ridley Park, Folsom, Glenolden, and Clifton Heights each have their own character, and the independently owned spots are a big part of that. Our Ridley Park neighborhood guide and Yeadon neighborhood guide dig deeper into what makes these communities tick, and the full neighborhood guide covers schools, commutes, and parks across the area.

As a Realtor serving Southeast Pennsylvania and New Jersey, I help buyers find homes in the towns they already love, and I have plenty of strong opinions about the local food scene along the way. If you are thinking about making one of these Delaware County towns home, I would be glad to help you explore the options, and I can point you to a great cup of coffee while we do.
